The ship leaves the harbour at the dawning of day. Dear brother, it takes you far, far away and as it sails onwards, my tears fall as rain, parting with you, feeling sorrow and pain. You’re one of the kindest, so joyful, and fair, a light in the darkness, so precious and rare, but you had to leave me at Rinmore Bay, to be with your loved one, so far away. You left your home in the city; it was merry and bright, where you sang songs of praise, to your own heart’s delight. You left your home in the country, where your heart found the joy; in the home you remember when you were a boy. You left your own native village and its folk ever true, they all loved you dearly, in your heart you knew. You waved goodbye to your mother as you sailed on your way, and she gave you her blessing, as she raised her voice to pray. So sail on loving brother across the high foam. May we all meet again in your Heavenly Home.

Tonight you gather ‘round me to say that ‘Goodbye,’ this message I give you, “Please, please, don’t cry. I know that you love me, as I go on my way, but remember I’ll be with you, each night and day.” “I’ll be with you in the sunshine, in the shadows, in the rain. I’ll be with you in your joys, your sorrows, your pain. I’ll be with you when the thunder’s heard high in the skies; I’ll be with you in the whispers, the tears and the sighs.” “I’ll be with you as the wind blows over the land, when there’s trouble in your heart, I’ll take your hand. I’ll dry all your teardrops as they gently fall. I’ll be there every time that I hear you call.” “ So don’t cry for me but celebrate my life, the joys and the sorrows, the glories, the strife, each life is a blessing, a gift oh so true, as I leave you, I whisper the words, I love you”.

On the shores of Lough Conn, I stand and I stare, at this beauty around me, so rich and so rare and I dream of the golden times in days of yore, when we stood together on its sandy shore. On mid summer’s evening we’d meet on the shore, dance ‘round the bonfire, tell tales of lore, ancestral traditions still strong in the heart, in this place of wonder; of which we’re a part. So sing songs of the past, of days that are gone, we were happy together by the shores of Lough Conn, memories forever will stay in my mind, of those kind, gentle people that I leave behind. Lough Conn with its beautiful waters so blue; waves ever lapping and sounds ever new, a true friend to all as I gaze at the scene, and admire the colours, blue, white and green. Nephin stands proudly into the West, of places on this earth; it’s one I love best. She’s guarding Lough Conn by day and by night; together they make such a glorious sight. The fisherman’s boat I can see from the beach, trout leap in the waters; they’re just out of reach. Seagulls hover over, in skies blue and clear, my memories of Lough Conn will ever be dear. Peter and Nora are of times long ago, Jimmy and Mary, Celina and Joe, Tom and Mary, Mike and Ann, are now gone; they shared happy memories by the shores of Lough Conn. In Grannies’ old cottage on Saturday night, we’d sit by the fire and watch the flames bright. Pakie would take the accordion in hand, Dad played the fiddle; we danced to the band. As I watch the sun setting over lovely Lough Conn, I know in my heart, it’s where I belong, but now I must leave you and bid you adieu, good luck and good fortune and blessings on you.

I’m here today, so far away, with memories of the past, of a dear sweet boy, so full of joy, with a love song in his heart. He left his home, so far to roam and settled in a land, where he found himself like no one else, the singer in the band. He loved to sing, what joy to bring, to his friends and family, with eyes so bright,‘t was his delight, to lift his voice in praise, ‘Amhrán na bhFiann,’ ‘The Derry Air,’ he’d sing as if a prayer, ‘Amazing Grace,’ no fear to face, he’s the singer in the band. Up in Heaven above, where there’s so much love, he sings a merry tune, we remembers still, his own strong will in this life to survive, but he’s happy now in his Home above with the Angels by his side. He’s full of pride ‘cause The Lord God sighed, “You’re, The Singer in the Band”. “Do you hear them sing?” The bells ring in... ‘The Singer in the Band.’

Éist leis an oíche, is éist leis an ngaoth, éist leis an aoibhneas, a ghrá gheal mo chroí. Éist leis na haingil is éist le mo ghuí, éist leis an suaimhneas, a ghrá gheal mo chroí. Boithrín uaigneach, smaointe domhain, croí ag luabadh leis an ngaoth, fraoch sa phortach, dathanna áille, portach domhain, poll i’m chroí. Brón ar an mbás , brón ar an mbás, brón is ochón , brón ar an mbás. Dia linn, Muire linn, brón is ochón, Dia is Muire linn. Éist le mo chroí, gach lá is oích’, na deora, na deora go deo, ag caoineadh ar an mbrón, tá mé cáilte gan tú, uaigneas is brón, ochón. Mo stóirín gheal, mo stóirín gheal, brón is ochón, mo stóirín gheal. An ghrá is ‘n gruaim, an ghrá is ‘n gruaim, brón is ochón an ghrá is ‘n gruaim. Slán go fóill, slán go fóill, brón is ochón, slán go fóill.

A mother’s love is like the mountain high; reaching out to touch God’s golden sky, looking out on high, from Heaven above, gently reaching out and full of love. She sings love songs to you from her hidden heart; moonbeams surround you from the start, rays of love to you from high above, sunbeams all around you, full of love. A mother’s love is like the ocean wide; ebbing and flowing with each tide, gently crashing on the sandy shore, echoing a song for ever more. A mother’s love is like a fire ablaze; creating mystery with a gentle haze, like burning embers glowing in the night, sending out her love, with all her might. A mother’s love is like the stars above; radiating light beams, full of love, gently glowing light into the dark, love bound love, is flowing to your heart. A mother’s love is like a gentle breeze; so cool, so calming, full of ease, heart felt sounds beat right into the night, flowing love until the morning light. A mother’s love will never leave your heart; love and harmony playing their part, care, devotion, honour, true and true, and reminding you to be ‘only you.’

Remember me with love when evening shadows fall, with dimming light, sweet memories recall. Time parted us to go on journeys’ way and leave behind the dreams of yesterday. Remember me with love on winter’s darkest night and in the summer when the sun is bright. Remember me when flowers bloom in the spring and when leaves fall, remember me again. Remember me with love when stars light up the night and when the moon gives off its glowing light, and when there’s silence in the midnight blue, remember me; you know I’ll remember you.

I pray, O gentle Guardian dear, may your love be always near. Comfort me all through this night; send your love, your care, your light. Guardian Angel, hear my prayer, Guardian Angel, hear my prayer, Guardian Angel ,hear my prayer, oh, oh ,oh, hear my prayer. Lead me till the morning start; peace comes slowly to my heart, take away all strains and fears, all my worries, sighs and tears. Hear this prayer, O Guardian dear, soft wings beating, always near, radiating love so true, goodness on its way, from you. Is é mo ghuí, m’aingil a ghrá, mé ‘bheith dilís duit gach lá. Tabhair grásta dom, pé áit a dtéim, is líon mo chroí, le grá duit féin. Guardian Angel, hear my prayer, Guardian Angel, hear my prayer, Guardian Angel, hear my prayer, oh, oh, oh, hear my prayer.

Angels singing from a high, gently floating in the sky, echoing their sweet refrain, sounding out across the plain. Angels came to her at night, formed a tunnel full of light, singing “Come with us, my dear, Heaven is so very near.” A smile came over her dear face; The Angels were so full of grace, they gently led her to the light. . . with one last breath, she began her flight. Soaring high to The One Above, Heaven bound and full of love, such a feeling of delight, echoed in her heart that night. Angels come so full of cheer, telling us they’re always near, guarding us with love so bright, rays of hope shine on this night. Glory to the One above, praise The One, so full of love, The First, the Last, the One and All; listen gently to His call.

Pat Birmingham left Ireland in the year of ’64, in search of a new life, on a distant shore; in London town, he found work with his fellow Irishman, plastering was his trade; his motto was ‘I can’. So cheers to you Pat Birmingham, without you we feel blue, you always told us what you thought, we thought the world of you, so cheers to you Pat Birmingham, a proud Carlow man, last one standing, your motto was ‘I can.’ In the Manor House, one summer’s night, in good old ’69, he met lovely Martina, and started a line; soon, he asked her to be his bride, to stay with him for life, and in 1970, they became man and wife. Josephine and Samantha were born with eyes so bright, they grew up and returned the love to their parent’s delight; years rolled by and soon they had families of their own, so Pat and Martina would never feel alone. You loved a life so full of cheer; to yourself you were true, a drink at a social gathering, sharing a joke or two,; friends you made down through the years were loyal to you, leaving us, Pat Birmingham broke our hearts in two.

In 1908, at Rossadillisk, upon an autumn day, Sheddie Feeney’s life began, not far from Cleggan Bay; he grew up on the coastline and loved to sail the sea, but 1927’s etched a bitter memory. A fishing vessel leaves the harbour at the break of dawn; men hail and hearty, in Rossadillisk that morn; the sea’s so calm, inviting, as the crew sails in the Bay, and from Cleggan harbour, they hear Sheddie Feeney say. “May the Lord of the fishermen, lead us safely home, protect us on this voyage, as we sail on the foam. Lord of the high winds, steer our vessel right, and bring us to our loved ones, by the evening light.” Sailing out in Cleggan Bay, with winds all fast asleep; casting nets overboard, in waters dark and deep, drifting slowly to and fro, hearts feel feathery light, as Sheddie Feeney sings his song to the crew’s delight. Without a word of warning, the skies grow dark as night; drawing in their treasure, they haul with all their might, heading back to harbour, as winds turn into gales, Sheddie Feeney sings his song as homewards he sails. The sea lashes the vessel, lightning forks the sky, thunder bellows all around, but still you hear the cry; as men are swept overboard, and down into the deep, to the wreckage Sheddie Feeney clings, winds begin to weep. From Rossadillisk, fourteen men were lost onto the sea, Friday, October 28th, 1927, lives on in memory. Sheddie Feeney lived his life for another 65 years but on March 29th, 1992, he whispered through his tears. “May the Lord of the fishermen lead me safely Home, protect me on this voyage, as I sail on the foam. Lord of the High Winds, steer my vessel right and bring me to my loved ones, by the evening light.”

We remember they gathered at the apparition wall, they listened to the silence, they answered the call. When they saw the holy vision, they joined hands to pray, they gave praise and devotion on that August day. Oh, Lady of Hope, in this Vale of Tears, we offer our troubles, our worries, our fears; as we pray in the chapel, for our loved ones above, we honour Our Lady, with hearts full of love. The rain fell all around them but their space remained dry, they fell on their knees as they gazed at the sky. The word went ‘round the village, more people gathered near, and Our Lady gave them comfort and wiped away a tear. They saw the holy vision, Our Lady at the wall, John and Joseph and the Angels answered the call .The Lamb of God was present, for one and all to see; so, in honour and worship, they fell on their knees. You came to the suffering, to those in great pain. You gave comfort to your loved ones, standing in the rain. You lit up the eyes of the young and the old, as they gazed at your vision, and your crown made of gold. Oh Lady of Hope, in this Vale of Tears, we offer our troubles, our worries, our fears; as we pray in this chapel, for our loved ones above, we honour Our Lady, with hearts full of love.
